TREFOIL TAKE HOME THE BENSON CUP

A sunny day on Ambersham 1 set the scene for the closely contested Benson Cup Final, with DS Equine taking on Trefoil on Saturday, 28th June.

In the red shirts for DS Equine, David Spragg (0) rode out at 1, with Lorenzo Metro (1) at 2, 4-goaler Ollie Cork at 3, and Matt Evetts (3) at Back. At 1 for Trefoil was Jonathan Gates (0), with Will Drewitt (2) at 2, Harry Muddle (2) at 3, and Glenn Sherriff (4) at Back.

The first chukka saw close play by both sides, however a costly error by DS Equine led to a successfully taken 40-yard penalty by Sherriff, giving Trefoil an early 1-0 lead. The second chukka saw more action, with Cork having a dominant performance, executing two under-pressure field goals, combined with brilliant defensive play by the rest of the team to turn the tables and leave DS Equine leading 2-1 going into half-time.

A freshly rested Trefoil came back with a vengeance in the third to regain their lead, with a successful 30-yard penalty and a breakaway field goal by Sherriff, leaving the score at 2-3 going into the last chukka. With all still to play for, DS Equine scored an early equaliser through Evetts; however despite the best efforts of all, a mistake in the final seconds of the game gave Trefoil a winning opportunity. An accurately taken 60-yard penalty by Sherriff sealed the victory, leaving Trefoil triumphant at 4-3.

A delighted Jonathan Gates stepped forward to receive the historic Benson Cup from Emily Russell. The X-Zony Best Playing Pony Rug was awarded to Chapa Annie, played by Ollie Cork, owned by Mathieu Van Delden, and cared for by grooms Jesus & Facundo Aquino and Maty Sosa.
