The Final of the West Sussex Cup concluded on Sunday the 1st September, seeing Lamar take on FWP & Co.
Rayyan Al Ajaji (0) rode out at number 1 for the Lamar side, with Mack McCaffery (0) at 2, Niall Donnelly (3) at 3, and 3-goaler Peter Webb at Back. Finn Jones (0) wore the number 1 shirt for FWP & Co, with Boyd Allen (1) at 2, Rufus Uloth (2) at 3, and Nick Clague (3) at Back.
The closely fought game saw excellent play from both sides keeping spectators guessing until the final bell, where Lamar ultimately emerged victorious 7 goals to 6.
The first chukka saw a great opening goal by Uloth, but a reply from Al Ajaji cemented Lamar on the leaderboard. With strong attacking from both sides, two further goals by Uloth and one for Webb left FWP & Co leading 3-2 after the first. Webb started the second chukka out strong for Lamar with a lovely shot on goal, however Uloth responded with a further two goals to take the lead. As the match neared the halfway point, a goal from Webb closed the gap for Lamar ending the second chukka 5-4 to FWP & Co.
The third chukka saw a similar story with another goal apiece from both sides, before Webb scored to take Lamar level going into the fourth. With all still to play for both teams fought hard in the last, seeing strong defensive play by Donnelly and Clague preventing any successful shots on goal. Still, despite FWP & Co’s efforts to pull ahead of their opponents, Lamar managed to get ahead and score one final goal from Webb to secure victory 7-6.
A delighted Rayyan Al Ajaji stepped forward to receive the West Sussex Cup, kindly presented by Louisa Uloth. The X-Zony Best Playing Pony Rug was presented to ‘Norma’, played by Peter Webb.
