The West Sussex Cup concluded this Sunday, the 31st of August, with Gould taking on Azul Cigarra on Ambersham 2.
George Gould (0) rode out at 1 for his Gould team, with Brigitte Boher (0) at 2, Jack Aldridge (2) at 3, and Will Harper (4) at Back. Wearing the number 1 shirt for Azul Cigarra was Peter Hugh-Smith (0), with Leo Stuart (0) at 2, Antonio Manzorro (3) at 3, and Oliver Hipwood (3) at Back.
The first chukka started with an opening goal out of the first lineout by Manzorro, quickly followed by another to give Azul Cigarra an early lead. This lead was extended by young Stuart, who executed an under-pressure goal in the closing minutes. However, a foul in the goalmouth gifted Gould a Penalty 1, cementing them on the scoreboard, 3-1. Gould pushed back in the second with a cut-shot goal by Boher in the third minute, putting just a goal in it going into half-time, 3-2.
The third chukka marked a turning point for Gould, with strong defence preventing any advancement by Azul Cigarra, and two great goals by Harper to take the lead for the first time in the match, 4-3. The final chukka saw great play by both sides; however, a determined Azul Cigarra fought back hard with a pressured field goal by Hipwood to equalise in the second minute. With everything to play for, Azul Cigarra carried this momentum forward with a breakaway field goal by Manzorro, ultimately securing victory 5-4 in this tight 6-goal final.
A delighted Peter Hugh-Smith stepped forward to receive the historic West Sussex Cup from Susie Gould. The X-Zony Best Playing Pony Rug went to Alunado, played and owned by Antonio Manzorro.
