The PSI Trophy Final took place on the penultimate weekend of the season, Sunday the 14th of September, with Trefoil facing Gould on a very rainy Brooks Field.
In green shirts, Jonathan Gates (0) rode out at Number 1, with Will Drewitt (2) at 2, Harry Muddle (2) at 3, and 4-goaler Glenn Sherriff at Back. For Gould, Gussie Gould (0) wore the Number 1 shirt, with Rufus Uloth (2) at 2, Jack Aldridge (2) at 3, and Jimmy Wood (4) at Back.
With the rain setting in, both teams took to the field with determination. Trefoil struck first, as young Drewitt opened the scoring with an early breakaway goal in the first minute. Gould responded quickly; a long shot from Gussie was finished by Wood to equalise. However, a last-minute goal from Sherriff left Trefoil ahead 2-1 at the end of the chukka. The second chukka followed a similar pattern. Sherriff scored within the opening minute under pressure from Uloth, only for Wood to answer with an impressive cut shot from the boards over 60 yards out. But Sherriff’s perfectly executed 60-yard penalty extended Trefoil’s lead to 4-2 going into half-time.
In the third chukka, Trefoil shifted gears. Sherriff produced a hat-trick of goals, supported by strong defending from the team that shut down Gould’s advances. Leaving Trefoil with a comfortable 7-2 lead heading into the final chukka. But Gould had other ideas, mounting an extraordinary comeback in the fourth. Wood converted three consecutive 40-yard penalties, then followed up with a near-impossible spot hit and a 30-yard penalty to secure his fifth goal of the chukka. With seconds left, Gould had levelled the match 7-7, forcing an unexpected extra chukka. The decider began in heavy rain, with both sides throwing everything forward. Gould created chances but failed to convert, and it was Sherriff once again who broke free to score the golden goal, sealing an 8-7 victory for Trefoil in a thrilling PSI Final.
Back in the dry of the clubhouse, Jonathan Gates proudly stepped forward to receive the PSI Trophy, presented by Chris Bethell on behalf of Peter Pattenden. The X-Zony Best Playing Pony rug was awarded to Tommy, played and owned by Jimmy Wood and expertly cared for by groom Bridget Stewart.
