The Brecknock Cup drew to a close on Sunday 30th August, with Cuatro Estrellas taking on Book Vault in the closely contested 10-goal tournament final on Lawns 2.
Riding out in pale blue shirts for Book Vault was Andy Cork (0) at 1, Ed Hitchman (3) at 2, Ollie Cork (4) at 3, and his brother Josh Cork (3) at Back. Wearing the number 1 shirt for Cuatro Estrellas was Justin Taylor (0), with Marcus Cork (3) at 2, Harry Muddle (3) at 3, and 4-goaler Glenn Sherriff at Back.
The first chukka began with close play from both sides, with intense defensive work preventing either team from finding the goal. However, Sherriff eventually broke through to score for Cuatro Estrellas, giving them a 1-0 lead going into the second chukka.
The second saw more goal-scoring action, with an opening 30-yard penalty converted by Josh Cork. Cuatro Estrellas swiftly responded, with back-to-back breakaway goals from Sherriff giving them a healthy 3-1 advantage going into half-time.
Marcus Cork opened the third chukka with an under-pressure strike to goal, followed by a runaway goal at speed from Muddle, as Cuatro Estrellas continued to build their lead. A last-minute 30-yard penalty conversion by Hitchman kept Book Vault within contention heading into the final chukka, with the score at 5-2.
The final chukka saw both teams give it their all, but an early mistake by Book Vault awarded Sherriff the opportunity to convert a 40-yard penalty. Despite a well-worked team goal from the Cork brothers, finished by Ollie Cork, it wasn’t enough to catch the dominant Cuatro Estrellas, who sealed a 6-3 victory.
A delighted Justin Taylor stepped forward to receive the Brecknock Cup from Anthony Coupland, founder of Yerba Spirit, who also provided the prizes. The X-Zony Best Playing Pony Rug was awarded to Sal, played and owned by Glenn Sherriff.
