Stonehurst took on Saucelands Polo this Saturday the 17th May, in the May 4 goal final on Lawns 3.
James Wheatley (-1) rode out at 1 for Saucelands Polo, with Rufus Burrell Thompson (0) at 2, Jonathan Willen (1) at 3, and Lanto Sheridan (3) at Back. For Stonehurst, William Roberts (0) wore the number 1 shirt, with Dominic Jones (0) at 2, Nick Clague (3) at 3, and 1-goaler Antonio Sorzana at Back, with Saucelands starting with ½ goal due to handicap difference.
The opening chukka showcased strong performances from both teams, but an early foul by Saucelands allowed Roberts to convert a 30-yard penalty, quickly followed by a skilled field goal. Teammate Clague added to the tally with a composed goal under pressure. Saucelands responded with a well-taken 30-yard penalty from Willen, ensuring they got on the scoreboard before the second chukka, ending the first with Stonehurst leading 3-1½. The second chukka told a similar story, with two impressive field goals from Stonehurst captain Clague and a brilliant strike by the young Argentine Sorzana. Their efforts extended Stonehurst’s lead to 6-1½ at half-time.
A tightly contested third chukka followed, with both sides showing excellent defensive work to deny any further scoring opportunities. The final chukka saw renewed determination from both sides, with Stonehurst adding two more goals courtesy of Sorzana and Roberts, while Saucelands fought back with strong goals from Willen and Burrell Thompson. Despite their efforts, it wasn’t enough to overcome the commanding Stonehurst side, who secured an 8-3½ victory.
William Roberts and Dominic Jones stepped forward to receive the May 4 Goal Cup from Lisa Roberts. The X-Zony Best Playing Pony rug was presented to Mohican played and owned by Nick Clague, and cared for by grooms Leah Bentley, Emmett Connolly and Theo Foilleret.
