Twelve teams entered the 1921 Cup 8 goal tournament with Charlie Cadogan’s Taittinger and David Turner’s DJ Cats both reaching the Final which was played on Ambersham 1 on Sunday 18th July 2021.
Posy Ash wore the number 1 shirt for Taittinger with Charlie Cadogan at 2, Hazel Jackson at 3 and Will Emerson at Back. Jon Turner played in position number 1 for DJ Cats with Hannah Parry Jones at 2, Eden Ormerod at 3 and Jake Daniels at Back.
Jake Daniels won the ball out of the first line out for DJ Cats. Possession switched back and forth until Daniels found himself with the ball again and took off for goal to score within the first 2 minutes of the chukka, putting DJ Cats on the scoreboard first. Taittinger made several attempts at goal during the remainder of the chukka; an attempt from Hazel Jackson went wide to the left and Charlie Cadogan’s shot at goal was cleared out of the goal mouth by Daniels. Jackson made an impressive steal from Daniels and ran to goal out of her own but wasn’t able to finish the job. A melee in the DJ Cats goal mouth was followed by an attempt from Posy Ash for Taittinger but this was cleared away once again by Daniels. The first chukka ended 1-0 to DJ Cats.
In the first half of the second chukka, Hazel Jackson scored for Taittinger to put the score at 1-1. No further goals were conceded with the ball being played end to end but no significant attempts made at goal by either team. The score remained 1-all at the end of the chukka.
The third chukka saw considerably more opportunities and successful attempts at goal. After the first throw in Taittinger fouled close to their goal mouth giving away a 30-yard penalty hit to DJ Cats which was successfully converted by Jake Daniels. The score now 2-1 to DJ Cats. Eden Ormerod then made an attempt at goal with a cut shot, however it went wide to the left. Taittinger knocked in from their back line, but the ball was yet again intercepted by DJ Cats. The ball went out over the Taittinger back line again, giving Will Emerson another knock in. Jake Daniels intercepted the ball once again for DJ Cats and backed the ball towards the goalmouth where Ormerod picked it up to score with an impressive cut shot, making it 3-1 to DJ Cats. The next goal came quickly, with Daniels winning the ball out of the line out and running to goal to score his third goal of the game. With the ball back in play, Emerson fouled to give away a 60-yard penalty hit to DJ Cats, however Daniels put the ball wide. The chukka ended 4-1 in favour of DJ Cats.
A 30-yard penalty hit was awarded to DJ Cats within the first minute of chukka four which was successfully hit between the posts by Daniels; the score now 5-1 to DJ Cats. Taittinger were able to concede one further goal when Will Emerson found the goalmouth to put the score at 5-2 in favour of DJ Cats. Daniels came out of the following line out with possession and made a clear run for goal, scoring once again to secure a 6-2 win for DJ Cats who lifted the 1921 Cup. The X-Zony Best Playing Pony rug was awarded to Lyric, played by Jake Daniels and owned by Jim Gilmore.
Five teams entered the Club’s third 4 goal tournament of the season. Tony Lorenz’s TLC Polo and the team of the Van Delden father-son duo, Bad Boys, met in the Final played on Lawns 3 on Saturday 17th July 2021.
Tony Lorenz wore the number 1 shirt for TLC with Timi Badiru at 2, Angus Rowan Hamilton at 3, and Duncan Hotston at Back. Mathieu Van Delden Jnr played at number 1 for his team, with Mathieu Van Delden senior at 2, Daniel Batchelor at 3, and Ollie Cork at Back.
TLC were first onto the score board with a goal from Angus Rowan Hamilton, putting the opening score at 1-0 to TLC. However, Bad Boys were soon able to equalize after TLC fouled to give away a 30-yard penalty hit which Ollie Cork successfully converted. Bad Boys fouled to give TLC a spot hit from which Angus Rowan Hamilton was able to score to put the score at 2-1 in favour of TLC at the end of the chukka.
Despite Angus Rowan Hamilton converting a 30-yard penalty at the start of the second chukka, Bad Boys just gained the upper hand. Ollie Cork answered Rowan-Hamilton’s penalty conversion when successfully converting his own 30-yard penalty hit to put the score at 3-2 to TLC. Bad Boys went on to gain the advantage with two further field goals from Cork and Daniel Batchelor. The score was 4-3 to Bad Boys by the close of the chukka.
Chukka three swung back in favour of TLC with Timi Badiru and Duncan Hotston both scoring to put them ahead by one again. Bad Boys weren’t able to create any opportunities to score and the chukka ended 5-4 in favour of TLC.
Timi Badiru scored at the beginning of the fourth chukka to put TLC ahead by two, however two consecutive fouls gave Ollie Cork a spot hit for Bad Boys which he successfully converted, followed by a 30-yard penalty hit which he also put between the posts to equalise the score. The chukka ended tied at 6-6 and the game headed into extra time. Timi Badiru was first to find the goalmouth in the extra chukka, scoring to win the game for TLC Polo 7-6 and securing the July 4 Goal Cup. The X-Zony Best Playing Pony rug was awarded to Model, played and owned by Ollie Cork.
