Cowdray Park Polo Club is delighted to host the UK’s inaugural All Pro Polo League (APPL) exhibition game which will take place at 5pm on Lawns 2 after the Argentine Ambassador’s Cup Gold Cup match. Teams will be announced shortly.
The All Pro Polo League (APPL) stems from Javier Tanoira’s ambition to take polo back to the glory days. His aim is simple: to encourage dynamic, open polo and motivate a professional attitude towards the sport. The APPL hopes to make polo a more straightforward, enjoyable spectator sport by enhancing the qualities that make the game so thrilling; a new set of rules—mainly related to blocking and tapping—have been put in place to simplify the game, not only for spectators, but for players and umpires as well.
With only one horse permitted per chukker, the APPL gives players the occasion of competing without the demands now synonymous with traditional high-goal polo tournaments. The APPL believes that the one-horse rule will make polo more accessible to a wider audience. By enforcing this rule, the league rewards players who focus their efforts on riding well and training their horses correctly. However, to allow players to adjust to this change, the APPL has reduced the length of a chukka from seven minuets down to five.
The All Pro Polo League prides itself in standing out from traditional polo tournaments. Free from speculation and economic exclusivity, the APPL aims to rebuild the purity of polo on foundations of professionalism while allowing the game to grow in speed and skill.
